Lincoln & Moulton History
J. Tilden Moulton (1808-1881), a Boston lawyer and Lewis’ father, was a personal friend of President Lincoln. Moulton was “Master in Chancery and was also associated with the Chicago Tribune.”

Nellie Gail Moulton wrote in her memoir, “Lewis had a brother, three years his junior. He was told that at one time Abraham Lincoln bounced him on his knee.” (2019.16.02, page 59)
Lewis Fenno Moulton “was born at Chicago on January 17, 1854, and spent the first years of his life in the parental home there, one of his early and cherished memories being of Abraham Lincoln, who frequently came to the Moulton home.” This biographical sketch was written by Samuel Armor in 1921 in the History of Orange County.
Part of President Abraham Lincoln’s lasting legacy was the the Homestead Act signed on May 20, 1862 which encouraged Western migration by providing settlers 160 acres of public land. Lincoln returned the missions to the Catholic Church in Civil War that ended in 1865. The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands (Freeman’s Bureau) was created, which provided the western expansion and cowboy culture. Lewis’ journey to California began in 1874 where he traveled by train and boat around the Isthmus of Panama.

Nellie Gail Moulton wrote in her memoir, “November 29th, 1908, I married Lewis Fenno Moulton and set off to Hawaii for our wedding trip, the first for me away from these shores.” (2019.16.02, pages 83-84)

1921 Thanksgiving Dinner Menu
Lewis and Nellie travel to Cuba and the Panama Canal October 1921. They celebrated Thanksgiving dinner on board the S.S. “Columbia” during the Pacific Mail Steamship Co. voyage. This traditional meal was served on Thursday, November 24, 1921 The menu measures 5 1/2 x 10 1/2″ (2018.51.08).
Mrs. Raymond Prothero, an El Toro resident and artist, used to entertain Nellie, Charlotte, and Louise at her residence. These women were all part of the Ebell Club of Santa Ana. We hope this set of recipes might inspire your own from this 1965 Ebell Club of Santa Ana Cookbook (2020.10.36).
