In this March edition of our newsletter, we are featuring the Swallows Day Parade, St. Patrick’s Day article, & From the Archive. Look for the Moulton Museum banners in the community at our events and city celebrations!

Moulton Museum reflects on the historic Swallows Day Parade held in San Juan Capistrano every March. Sixty years ago, Nellie Gail Moulton and her sister, Carrie Drews, participated in the 1962 Swallows Day Parade in the historic, red fringed buggy. Enjoy our historic images from our collection. Look for us on Saturday, March 12, 2022 in a stagecoach with our banner below!

We are in the middle of constructing the museum in Laguna Hills at the Moulton Ranch Center. Please stay tuned for an exciting announcement about our first exhibition, 1874: Into the West this year! Keep an eye out in Laguna Hills for our banners celebrating our history.

The Moulton family recently gathered for a company retreat, and donated to the museum a large collection of historical materials that date back to the 1800s. These artifacts will be featured in our premiere exhibition.

From the Archive

Lewis Moulton is about 26 years old, in about 1880. (2022.04.13)

In 1874, when he was twenty years old, my father took a boat to the Isthmus of Panama, crossed by train, and took another boat to San Francisco. He wasn’t too happy there, so he took a boat to Wilmington, California, then a stagecoach to Santa Ana.”

 Daguerreotypes Online Exhibit (2019.08)

In the museum’s collection, we have an array of Daguerreotypes (2019.08) with unidentified individuals. They have velvet lined enclosures with miniature claps to keep the image protected.

St. Patrick’s Day will be celebrated on Thursday, March 17, 2022.

Monsignor O’Sullivan was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on March 19, 1874 and later entered the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. O’Sullivan visited San Juan Capistrano in the 1900s. Under his leadership, the mission was restored and the conservation program was developed. He co-authored Capistrano Nights which details the local San Juan Capistrano folklore and the return of the Swallows every year.
