Exhibit Overview

How does water reach your faucet and what does it take to keep it flowing?

Know the Flow invites you to take control of a simulated water district and discover the hidden systems behind our everyday lives. Designed like a real-time strategy game, this hands-on exhibit puts players of all ages in the role of water system operators—balancing supply, demand, emergencies, and sustainability.

Created in partnership with the Moulton Niguel Water District, this permanent interactive installation combines cutting-edge game design with rich historical storytelling. It’s water education like you’ve never experienced before.

Heritage & Legacy

Why This Exhibit Matters

Water has always been essential, but it's never been simple.

For Lewis Moulton, managing water was crucial to sustaining cattle and sheep on the original Moulton Ranch. After his passing, his daughters and their spouses carried on his legacy, playing a founding role in the creation of what became the Moulton Niguel Water District (MNWD).

In fact, three out of the five inaugural board seats were held by Moulton family members.

That legacy continues today: MNWD is now a national leader in water conservation, among the first districts in the U.S. to adopt recycled water for irrigation.

Know the Flow connects the past to the present, helping visitors see how historical decisions still shape daily life and how future choices depend on today’s awareness.

Intuitive and Inclusive Gameplay

Large blue palm-sized buttons make gameplay tactile and fun. Visual indicators help you balance pressure, avoid overflows, and learn the realities of water system management, whether you’re 8 or 80.

This exhibition has the feel of a puzzle that needs to be solved in real-time and with teammates. It reminds one of the electronic games popular for party nights with friends.
