Robert J. Allison is a Professor of History at Suffolk University and has taught at the Harvard Extension School since 1993. He is the author of numerous books on American history, including a series of short works on the American Revolution, histories of Boston and Cape Cod, and longer studies of the Barbary Wars and naval hero Stephen Decatur. He also edited The Interesting Narrative of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African. Drawing on decades of teaching across all periods of American history, with a primary focus on the American Revolution and the early republic, Allison created two courses for The Great Courses: Before 1776: Life in the American Colonies and The Age of Benjamin Franklin. He serves as President of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, a scholarly organization dedicated to publishing primary documents on early American history, is a life trustee of the USS Constitution Museum, and, as co-chair of Revolution 250, hosts its weekly podcast featuring conversations with historians, museum curators, and living history interpreters.
