J. P. Daguerre

by in Articles
Jean Pierre Daguerre (1896-1911) born in Hasparren, Basses-Pyrenees, France. J.P. Daguerre was Lewis Moulton’s Basque business partner. He arrived in California in 1874. He was sponsored by Domingo Amestory who was an early financiers of the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Los Angeles. The Amestoys had the “Rosecrans Rancho in what is now Gardena. J.P. partnered with Marco Forester in San Juan Capistrano’s thriving wool industry in 1882.

Jean Pierre immigrated to the United State in 1874.  Incidentally he was on the same boat with his future wife Maria whom he married in 1886.

“After a few years he went into the sheep business for himself. In February 1895, Father purchased Rawson’s 17,000 acres. A few months later Mr. Daguerre bought a one-third interest in it. In 1899 they bought Mr. Bacon’s piece. They bought other property as time went on, so the ranch was eventually 21,723 acres.”
Louise Moulton Hanson, interview by Bettie Webber, March 16, 1994, OH 2355, Center for Oral and Public History, California State University, Fullerton.
His 1/3 interest in L.F. Moulton Co. was primarily in modern day Laguna Niguel.

Jean Pierre Daguerre (1896-1911) born in Hasparren, Basses-Pyrenees, France.
  • According to his biography and other records, they claim he was from Hasparren. However, the immigration record of his niece Grace Heguy indicates she was coming to her uncle Jean Pierre Daguerre. Therefore, the marriage record of Grace’s parents led to Mouguerre and this birth record. Since his sister Marie Mathilde was born in a different house, it is likely they were just workers in Mouguerre and possibly moved later to Hasparren where Jean Pierre was raised. Further research necessary to confirm.

Mr. Lewis Moulton,

Very Dear Companion,

I would like to let you know that the desert is very dry. There isn’t anything. On the way [here] we had a lot of work and a lot of misery as far as water and meadow. The animals are quite hurt [injured]. I have lost some. Last night it snowed on the mountain range and water in the desert. Maybe now we will be a little better.

And would like that if you send the bulls if you can by the 20th [of the month] to Mojave without fail and send a man with them and a good shepherd because I have one that isn’t worth anything. You can send him along with the bull fighter.

Much affection to you and you wife, and to my family [Without anything else to say], I wait for news from you
